The North American Free Trade Agreement was passed twenty years ago. The objective was to send a few good jobs to Mexico so that America would have as strong and prosperous a neighbor to the south as we have in Canada to the north.
Millions of good manufacturing jobs were sent to Mexico in the first few years. Over time, however, these jobs were then sent by Mexico to China by a handful of Mexican industrialists who are now among the richest people in the whole world.
Two thirds of Mexico’s economy is totally dependent upon the U.S. One third of their Gross Domestic Product comes from money sent home by illegals working in the U.S. Another third of their GDP comes from drug trafficking in the U.S. The other third comes from the few remaining industries that sell all their products in America. These “maquiladoras” along the border employ workers in dirty, unsafe third world conditions.
Mexico’s GDP is 3.5%, a lot better than ours. No wonder!
By every conceivable measure, Mexico is worse off now than when NAFTA was passed. Drug lords in Mexico are more powerful than the Mexican government. Tens of thousands of people are killed every year by the drug-inspired civil war going on in Mexico.
The worse the situation gets the harder Mexicans try to enter the U.S. illegally.
Cancelling NAFTA will do Mexico a big favor. It will bankrupt their mega-billionaires. It will shut down the four lane superhighway of drugs into the U.S. and thus bankrupt their drug lords. The Mexican government will then be able to win their civil war and establish peace within their borders.
The hard working Mexican people will then be able to attract industries and good jobs without the help of any facilitating by the U.S. government.
