The last son of a family whose other sons or father have been killed in action was the family’s “name bearer,” and he would not be assigned to combat duty on the front.
The U.S. armed forces has a similar policy. Now that gays can serve openly, how will they deal with two remaining sons, one of whom is gay? Will they not send the heterosexual son into combat? Will gays never get a “name bearer” exemption since they never have offspring?
Now that women can serve in combat, will female siblings also get the “name bearer” extinction?
