Gay-friendly services have been held for the past six years at the Our Lady of the Assumption church in Soho, the center of London’s gay scene. (Assumption is, in Christianity, the taking up of the Virgin Mary into heaven in body and soul after her death.)
These gay services were approved by the Church’s top doctrinal official Cardinal William Levada, former archbishop of San Francisco. He was recently replaced by Gerhard Mueller, a German archbishop anxious to resolve this contradiction in the teachings on homosexuality, in a Reuters report.
The official reason the Church gave for cancelling these services is that it was improper for gays to come from all over London to these twice-monthly services. Penitents should attend their local establishment, Church officials said.
Amen to that. Gays have too long lived isolated in their own little world. They should be going to mass every day, not once a month in a church with a thousand other gays, in a festive party atmosphere used more likely than not to hook up for some good times after.
Conservative Catholics have often protested the contradiction inherent in these gay masses. The Church teaches that homosexuality is a sin.
According to the Reuters report, “the Our Lady of the Assumption church will now become a parish for disaffected Anglicans who became Catholics in protest against moves in their churches towards allowing female and gay bishops.”
Kudos. Now, if we can only do something about those hot pink robes…
