“Destructive outsiders” were prosecuted by special courts. Capitol crimes (i.e., the death penalty) were handed down to Germans who listened to foreign radio, ignored air-raid sirens, helped POWs escape, refused to perform civic duties, and who committed sundry other crimes against the German people.
In America, we put people like that in Guantanamo Bay, where they rot for 15 years before being subject to a mock military trial and summarily sentenced to life without parole – for the heinous crime of; well, nobody knows anymore.
If you’re a homosexual, you can leak 250,000 highly classified documents to the media and get 35 years in Leavenworth; eligible for parole in 5. All you have to do is blame it all on a spat with your lover (this was when homosexuality was still a crime in the military).
If you’re straight, the Department of Justice seeks the death penalty for treason for simply implying that the NSA spied on U.S. citizens – which, we soon learn, is actually quite true.
