This was a utopian type of community founded by Willibald Hentschel in 1923. They strove to live at one with nature with spiritually expanding group activities and “volkish” political objectives (i.e., mindful of community values).
This live-in-harmony-with-nature motif was central to the Nazi philosophy, and from 1933, Artamanen was used to promote pro-German culture throughout Eastern Europe.

Modern American leaders are loathe to be associated in any way with nature – national parks, forests, even to be seen in such vile areas. Hunting is evil. Fishing is decadent. Forests and all who reside in them are obscene.
Strip mining to expose coal seams is progress. Fracking and industrial waste that pollutes streams and lakes is progress. Nature is evil. Destroy it!
