The autonomic response for supervisors when they find an underling is disabled or different in some way that is unpleasant to them, is to double the work load or – more subtly – half the time allowed to complete their work. I call this the Tough Love Syndrome, as promoted by President Bush and his Administration. Eventually the sacrificial lamb quits, leaving all that hard work for the supervisor to take credit for – to rebuild his or her damaged ego. It’s happened to me in my career time and time again, and I’m sure you know somebody who has been victimized like that too – minorities, gays or lesbians, older workers, women; you name it. It’s barbaric and uncivilized, and shouldn’t happen.
