Over 14 million Americans draw food stamps, up 10% in the last four years. The average benefit is $134 a month.

The Obama administration championed a plan to give 20 million cell phones away to food stamp recipients, welfare families and poor people on disability. They get a free cell phone, and Uncle Sam pays their cell bill.
They said people need cell phones to look for work. Then Obama signs an Executive Order waiving the look-for-work requirements. Now they need cell phones to social network so they can find all the government freebies that are available.
It used to be there was something of a stigma associated with food stamps, having to pay for your groceries with monopoly money. Being on the public dole was shameful.
Lately they use a food stamp credit card to pay for their groceries. Classy!
Now they can even talk on their new cell phones while waiting at the register. Molto classy.
New Jersey mayor Cory Booker has taken up a challenge from a Twitter follower to live on food stamps. (Actually he’s just following through on a New Year’s resolution to lose weight.)
I wonder if he gets a free cell phone too?
I hear ketchup and relish make cell phones quite tasty.
